this memorial is on my local ride,it commemorates the loss of 26 child miners who died underground when the ventilation shaft they were using to leave the coal mine was flooded when the river next to the pit burst it`s banks. the youngest was only 7 years old,SEVEN YEARS OLD and working under ground in a coal mine, unbelievable and so sad.

We might not live in a perfect society ..but at least in this country child labour has ( in the main ) been eradicated . Both of my grandads worked down the pit and although conditions would not have been quite as harsh they still wouldn't have been a bed of roses..good that you took a little time out to reflect ....

It also sad that the memorial looks uncared for, I know it's a very long time ago but it'd be nice if it was kept better. Poor, poor little sods.
We pass the German cemetery and the Katyn memorial regular on Cannock rides, both sad for different reasons. Always gives me pause for thought while I am out doing something I love. Makes you appreciate what you have got.

I passed the polish memorial today on the way back from Riffraff stopped and actually read what was on it I have passed it hundreds of times over the years going over the chase as a child and a adult but never read or took much notice . Your right it dose make you stop and think of the sacrifice given so we can live free today and enjoy the things we do . but these pool little ones just having life taken from them for masters of industries tragic Thank the Lord for the different working rules that we have now to stop child labour .

Sad times, always worth a moment of reflection when ever you see something like this. We have a small plaque at the top of Spooky Wood for a lad who passed away, nothing like the above but still worthy of a moments thought

You just couldn't imagine it now could you? Tragic waste of life!
Unfortunately this still happens in far too many parts of the world.
