After a bit of advice on these as im hovering over the danger button but ive not hit it yet.
Im looking at a Garmin Edge 500 I wont need the heart rate monitor as I've got one but im tempted by the speed/candence for my training bike. Anyone got one? If so wahts it like an if not any alternatives?

If you can afford it go for the 800 instead - they can be had for a decent price now the 810/1000 are out. I bought mine with trail maps and its a cracking bit of kit.

Im interested in this now too as just got a new phone (Galaxy note 4) and its not coming to the trails. so how do you get a specific trail on the edge ? (7stanes maps ? ) all new to this , all i know is that you upload data to strava.

There are a few sites out there - I use www.ridewithgps.com Search for a route you want (or map your own) download it to your edge and follow it like a sat nav - simples.

I started with a Bryton rider 35 then got a rider 50 with the maps. Does everything I want it to do and a lot cheaper than a Garmin but if I had the money I would have a Garmin due to the ease of uploading to Strava and the ability to upload maps to it.
If you just want HRM, the cadence and the ability to upload your ride the Rider 35 would be my choice, if you want/need mapping go for the Garmin.

Im hoping to still be able to link it to strava etc so garmin an the like are prefereable. The mapping funtion could be good theres a lot of hidden un marked trails up my way main reason we dont ride them is we have no idea where they go. Dont think i can stretch to the 920 though Euan, it is a nice bit of kit. Again with teh Edge 800 ill have to see what that comes out cost wise.

Thought youd have a long string between the two to put through your sleeves

Sorry Gaz .. For jumping on this as I didn't mean to hi-jack your question ... I mentioned this on the other site ...there is a very good / excellent free to download app called ViewRanger which I have on my I-phone . Once downloaded you can record your routes onto either the basic standard map or ...for very little money you can buy O.S.maps either 1:25 or 1:50 scale ..by the map or tile You can zoom in and out . This also gives you your GPS location on the map and although I still carry a map I have found this tool invaluable as a reference to check if we are where we should be ..especially on moorland crossings which we are riding for the first time .. Before going to the additional expense of buying a dedicated GPS unit ...and as long as you don't mind carrying your phone with you ..give this a try first

Depends what you want it to do, used mine the other day with the live map found some nice little trails id not been down before and gave me loads of silly information which being a geek i liked. Not sure what extra toys the Edge 100 Neil has to the 800 i have has. Mine was 210 from CRC with a Cadence and heart rate monitor. Which ever you get though worth downloading a map set the on board one is utter pish

Killswitch, it is a whitebox jobbie says factory refurb unit but came with a 12 month warranty anyway and everything looks pristine. Map wise it came with some horrible map that unuseable. I downloaded a new map on which i dont know if stanes is on as ive not ridden it. You will be able to download maps for there though mine weirdly has the map for Aston Hill which is a bit pointless.
I have a link at home for maps i did put it into the thread Burton started about GPS things its pretty good.
