I know it's personal choice but I'm just wondering what rise people have on their bars. I'm 6'3 and my bars are a fair bit lower than my seat . I've been suffering a bit of backache and wondered if this could be contributing

Ste, have you looked at the rebound settings on your rear shock? I was having a bit of back trouble and setting my rebound slightly slower made a massive difference as the bike wasn't jerking my back after the initial hits. My be something to look at along with the rise of your bars?

Do you do any off the bike exercises, I'm 6'4'' and have to constantly do core strength stuff off the bike or im I get lower back pain all the time, a shorter stem will stop you stretching to far, I wouldn't worry about bar rise just yet, look at roadies, they ride on the drop bars at knee height for hours on end

6'6" here, standard bars on the bike. I do get almost debilitating back pain sometimes, sadly there's not much i can do about it, just have to power through.

Jaysus ...apart from anything else I am beginning to feel slightly inadequate and a bit like a dwarf at 6'...
Note to self : don't upset these buggers too much / get some sprinting training in case you ever do !

I'm running a short stem too. I know what you mean about the weird roadies but they are fully bent over whereas I'm at an angle which could be irritating my back ? I thought taller riders may use higher rise bars but upto now, it seems not

Could be wrong but I assume just raising bar height will have a large impact in the performance of the bike, your on an xl frame I imagine?
And is your seat in the correct position to the cranks?

Yeah it's an xl frame mate. I'm not sure about the seat position being correct? Very basic description but your seat should be level, with your pedal in the "6 o'clock" position your leg should be straight, at the "3 o'clock" position the front of your knee should be in line with the axle, a lot of people have frames and stems ( reach) to small so move there seat right back to compensate, this immediately puts a stretch on your lower back through your hips and thighs

Shorter stem. Try some core exercises as well. Deadlifts etc... Or stop being a girl.

I've had backache on both my bikes. A shorter stem and 10mm rise on the bars helped both times. Eliminated it in fact. But then i've gone for the L instead of XL bikes. 6'3". Stems are so cheap, maybe worth trying a second hand shorter one and see. Even cheaper would be moving the seat forward 10/20mmto find a comfortable reach

The new front mudguard will cure your backache. You'll be too embarrassed to go out on the bike with that on.
Seriously though, having the bars low is bound to bend your spine a bit and the shock loads of MTBing are just the icing on the cake. I concur with the suggestion of a higher rise stem as a start.

well i an 6,3 and one bike is l and the other is xl, and on the l i had to put 40 mm riser bars and a riser stem to stop my hands going numb after about 10 kms, i have fitted 35mm risers to the cube which is xl and that is spot on for me no numb hands or bad back now

I'm 6 ft 5 and don't have any back ache problems on the bike like. I used to when I had my felt and I think that is because it was too small for me (was just a large and should have been an XL)
on the covert (which was a large, they didnt do XL but the bike fit perfect) I had 38mm rise fat bars and one or 2 spacers under my renthal stem. I didn't have to fiddle about with it at all.
on the TR450 I have 30MM rise burgtec bars and 40mm burgtec stem. I have a few spacers between the topcrown and the headset
just have a play about mate

6'4" here & I like to have grips almost at seat height.
On my Spesh Stumpy I used to have a super high stem that looked a bit odd, but have since put on longer forks, spacers on the uncut steerer, raiser stem, raiser bars, which looks better. Using the spacers I can raise and lower the bars a bit to get it just right. Also on my Reverb dropper I put an adaptor to offset the seat back further. The bikes never felt more comfortable and balanced for me & riding great. It's a Large frame, I should really be on an XL though this will affect the reach / wheelbase more than the grip height.
Also I know it’s heresy but slightly narrower bars will put you a bit more upright too & might help with the back.
