seems stange why he asked if I prefer bank transfer .I will tell him cash and then see if he pulls out of the deal or don't turn up .
I would prefer BT but then him saying he wont hang around but then say he will add me as a payee tonight for it to be quicker .

To be fair, when I've bought things before I've often done it via bank transfer, although it's usually for items I've posted or had posted so they've not been shipped until the funds have cleared.
I'd push for the cash and then double count it.

I sold a bike earlier this year and the guy paid by bank transfer.we sat at my kitchen table, him on his phone and me on my ipad and as soon as he sent the money it appeared straight away in my account.but on the other hand you can't beat good old fashioned cash.

Cash ...if he is offering! Might put you out a bit ..but at least you have got it in your mitts ... he asked what i would prefer and i said bank transfer but i wouldn't let bike go unless i seen money in the actual account . hes coming from south lakes and said it will take him 90 mins. I also said i dont mind cash but then i said i would check each note . I'm probably being paranoid and being as i sold it on gumtree. after all he didn't want reverb either .

When I sold my cube I got the guy to leave as much as he could draw in cash, transfer the balance and then collect the bike, thus may imply more trust on his behalf.
He can't expect you to let him take it before it clears, imagine telling leisure lakes you'll take the bike and ring through with a payment when you get home.

I'm pretty sure that once he makes the transfer he can't cancel it. That's the message I get when I'm doing a transfer. As long as you watch him and you see the confirmation, you'll be ok

As long as you watch him and you see the confirmation, you'll be ok Cant you transfer funds with a bank account with a credit card attached and use funds from credit card ? I think bank transfer is easier for him as it saves him going to the bank drawing it out when hes finished work and on his way to me , i can understand him getting away too as its a 90 min motorway drive , he wanted originally to meet in carlisle . Its just when he said he cant stick around after sending bank transfer .

Bank transfer is usually very quick but depends on banks. If you are both main high street banks no issue but more obscure may take longer. Find out if you are with the same bank?

eBay has guarantees and buyer protection and I doubt anyone would send the money for high value items before collecting from a forum deal

I agree as i wouldn't pay someone a grand and then go and pick it up to find they are not in or done a runner . didnt even ask him as its just cheeky . i think he prefered bank transfer as when he got to mine just saves him going to bank from work .

Take the cash with the guy to the bank. Then you'll see it get paid in and no dodgy notes. I did this for my £15k car I would if he came earlier as he will be at mine at 5pm , i have just emailed him to see if he can get to carlisle before 5pm and then i can bring bike with me .

If doing bank transfer, only release bike once you can log into your account and see the funds there. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES release the bike before this, even if you watch him do the transaction or he says he has no time to hang around. If has no time to hang around tell him to bring cash.
This world is full of rip-off merchants and you have to protect yourself. Take no chances mate.

as said before, bank transfers usually only take seconds or minuites these days, bought 2 cars recently and the bank transfers were instant. however getting to a bank short notice for me is a right pain in the arse for me but if this deal has been on the table for a couple of days im sure he would of just been and got it out. sounds fishy him not wanting to stay. be careful.

If it's too much trouble to get cash then he should be prepared to wait or arrive earlier to allow it to go through , either way he should set the transfer details up before he comes so it should be pretty instant .
