Having decided a number of weeks ago that our winter riding would mainly be at trail centres or routes offering reasonable surfaces..here's one that I haven't done since I first started mountain biking and didn't have the confidence to venture out in the hills on my own . I've done bits of it lots of times ..but the whole route only once . It starts 5 mins away from the Metrocentre at Swalwell Rugby Club and heads off up Whickham Bank before diverting off right on a bridleway climbing around the edge of Fellside and then over on a track taking us to Sunniside from there we head towards the Tanfield Railway where we use a bridleway heading off towards Kibblesworth before going along the side of Beamish Open Air Museum ..from here it's a case of getting on to the C2C route skirting Stanley and diverting off at Old Kyo down to Harperley ( where once upon a time there used to be a zoo! ) climbing up to join the road and heading towards Flinthill where we drop down to go behind the Plough Inn on a bridleway that links us in to the disused railway line / bridleway now known as the Derwent Walk with a mainly all down hill drop back to the car park at Swalwell There's nothing at all too technical about this ride ..but one you can't help but enjoy given it's close proximity to urban areas ..but still with the feeling of being "out there "

Yes. This will be a fascinating trail. A great part of the industrial heritage of Northumberland, nay the nation, will be beneath our wheels. But it's a good job that skirting Stanley is not still a flogging offence.

Hey ....who says it's not ?! ..haha I've known Stanley all my life having lived there for the first 30 years ..or more precisely Annfield Plain ..which was a thriving village when I lived there ..killed in subsequent years due to a bypass Apart from anything else I think you will be pleasantly surprised at the amount of "scenery" we pass through!

Not sure we will make this ride as will be in Carlisle but will let you know later in week. Has there been a boundary change as I'm sure it will be Tyne & Wear and Co. Durham heritage, lol.

Due to the fact that ther is a rugby match on Saturday we have decided to meet and park at the public car park next to Maguires Fish Restaurant and Takeaway...just a little further along the road in Swalwell ...to start riding for 10.00AM. I dont think we will need them but pack your lights just in case! Four of us confirmed so far ...with just Dave & Jean to commit but they are 90% there...anyone else out there want to tag along ...its quite non tech and a steady plod.... I rate Maguires as the second best chippy in the north-east ( after Gormans at Cowgate, Newcastle)...if anyone is hungry afterwards! Obviously a pint somewhere is mandatory at the end !

'Twas a good ride ...nothing too technical ..but crikey chums ...was it mucky ! The sun decided not to put in appearance ..so it stayed grey all day ..so not many pics were taken We did hang around for a while at Tanfield Railway ..the oldest railway in the world ..and we saw the Santa Express pull into the station carrying lots of excited dads, mam's & kiddies ...fully booked with 150 folk...all day ! Took some pics of a nice old steam engine transporting the passengers ..which I will stick up later! Nice pint in the Bridle Path in Whickham at the end ..don't tell the others but as we went out separate ways ..I couldn't resist and went back to Maguires and had a massive Haddock , Chips & Curry Sauce..well blooted sitting here writing this !
