So, eventhough i haven't committed to coming the fact I can't get it out of my mind looks as if I will be joining in! My main issue is finding a bigger pair of nuts for the descent from the top of Snowdon Last night I was kept awake by the shoe quandry. I ride flats and have a lovely special pair of Shimano's, which have fantastic grip. However, on the rare occassions I have to push they are good as a chocolate fire guard when it comes to slippy, wet rocks, muddy, etc terrain. So do i stick with them when 40% will be a carry or push or do I wear my Northface Hedgehogs which are grippy and more comfortable when walking with a little less grip on the way down? Anyone else worried about this or am I just over thinking it?

If it's just a little less grip on the way down ..I would wear the Hedgehogs .. If it's " moist " on the way up you could be walking like spotty dog off The Woodentops and I have nearly face planted pushing a bike up a mountain on a few occaisions for a loss of grip.. Spotty dog comes in at about the 6.30 mark if you don't want to watch the full ..gripping episode !

Relax chaps ...you are classically overthinking things based on what you have read and heard . Now I have never ridden Snowdon ..but ..on similarly " epic " rides such as Torridon and Slighcan on Skye ..I had similar concerns to what you are experiencing and more than a few sleepless nights before going ! The reality is ( in my experience) that it's never as "bad " as you think .. Chill out ..you are experienced riders and you will manage no problem !

Like Ergaz said, if you don't feel you can ride something, push it or roll it.
There's no point in injuring yourself.
It's all about having fun at the end of the day and if you're out of your comfort zone the whole time, you won't enjoy it.
Go at your own pace.

I'm not worried about the technical side (though I should be, as I am shit) I am more worried about the fitness side, but I still have time to work on that. In a way that's good too, as I am so focused on that I haven't got time to realise I will probably die on the way down, mangled into a lump of strawberry jam because I tried a drop off I couldn't handle.

Hodgy has said it bang on, I did Snowdon (just checked my calendar) 11 weeks after getting my first proper full suss mountain bike, and about 5 months since my first ever off road ride around Sherwood, my previous experience was pines and cannock only, was so naive I didn't even have knee pads, I made it down alive, crashed a couple of times but didn't brake anything. Your massively over thinking it, I would call the descent a red/black trail center descent in most places, one or two dot downhill track in others. Nothing that you cant do, even if you don't think you can do it, your bikes can, if in doubt flat out!! especially you Ergaz, your wagon wheels will roll over everything

You old folk worry way too much... It's like any other ride.. A GROUP ride. Like the SAS, we never leave a man behind.. (Zupoo said that once) Me and Nelly will wait for you at the bottom

It's not necessarily age, it's more the roasting from the OH that scares me if i break something before our holiday the following week Plus being self employed. TBH I'm not fussed about having to get off and walk if need be, just don't want to walk all the way and down lol!

Please also bear in mind that I'll be on a brand new bike.. Probably only ridden two maybe three times before Snowdon (if i'm lucky)
May actually finish off the build at the campsite!

Oh ..more than tempted ! I was itching to put my name down ...there are a couple of things stopping me .. I'm still waiting to hear dates for a similar weekend ( Penmachno ) from davet ..and failing that there is also a 2 day Scottish trip in early June under consideration with Ian Bell ..I will only be able to do one of these ... Also as a minor fly in the ointment is the fact that it is my birthday on the 26th ...and I would be expected to be around home for that ...but yeah I'm envious ! I hope to meet some of you if the " Cumbria " ride that Adam has put forward comes off ...

I walked up Snowdon last April. We used The Watkins path which is on the opposite side of the mountain I think. The sun on the way up was superb. I actually burnt the back of my neck.
We got to cloud level and the change was amazing!
There was snow on the path which was about 4 foot deep, the wind was strong enough to blow you away if you weren't careful and at the summit, the ground was covered in about 5 inches of solid ice..
The snow covered a lot of the paths and we had to use step-by-step GPS to ensure we stayed on the right course.
It turned out to be a brilliant walk and one I would love to do again... Even in those conditions
It was scary to be honest. Sure enough, on our way bacK down, the sun was stunning!
