North mate , top of Southern a bit of a bitch well I had a bad ride just didn't get any of that bit rite , till we got to where the board walk bit was and that was fast and flowing But but great day well worth it loved the climbs as well.. Ok bout s..t my pants on the first point when climbing up and it's a nice drop of the side.. Hahaha yeah that's a nice steep drop down there! When I'm doing a training ride on my own I tend to take it gentle up South and ride all three descents down in one without stopping - it's good Fort Bill Training! or take the fire road climb from Cyclewise to North middle descent and do middle descent and final in a one-er! We had a brill time if the weather had been a bit better we would of done that route off pista you suggested well we think we found the start of it the climbs were good nothing to boring very rooty trails as well some evil slippy roots lol had a few dabs .. Still buzzing about the DH

Looks like a great ride and sorry I couldn't get there. In 8 years at my current job I have never had to work Saturdays and just had. To do three in a row. What made it doubly hard yesterday is the fact we are based just off the A590 and I get a view of grizedale and the old man of coniston while at work and it reminded me of what I was missing.

Looks an excellent ride sorry I Pezzed out, but emergencies at work and all that!... Is it worth the 4 hours? I'd say so. We didn't do a massive amount of miles but what we did do was quality. There is a fair amount of climbing but not nearly as much as I was expecting and the majority of it is quite technical so is entertaining.. The downs are superb.. The North loop was my favourite which is fast and flowing with a few drops and jumps thrown in if you fancy 'em. Most, if not all, are avoidable though. We did the North loop twice and it was better the second time round. The South loop was great too but very rocky and as the ground was soaking wet, very slippery towards the top. The start of the descent isn't flowing at all, it's all rocky technical stuff. I'd love to try it again in the dry, the technical side to it should keep you on your toes. If it had been dry yesterday, I'd have loved it. About halfway down, it smooths out and becomes much quicker with drops, jumps etc. We did both loops, had dinner and then did the North loop again. I think if the blue had been open, we'd have given that a bash too as a bit of a warm down. I'd go as far to say that Whinlatter is now my favourite trail centre.. Even if parking is £7.50. Handy as I pass within 30 miles of it fairly regularly We were lucky weather wise. The forecast said it would be 'heavy rain' all day. We had some light drizzle whilst we were eating dinner. We didn't look in the shop, Cyclewise. I think we all just forgot to be honest! Great day, sorry you couldn't make it. We didn't do the route Rach suggested as much as we all wanted to. The wind in exposed areas was enough to blow you (me) off your (my) feet. Next time though, definately

I didn't see it myself but apparently they had a carved wooden mushroom shaped thing beside one of the trails. Slowcogger thought it looked like a nob and is convinced they put it beside the trail because they knew I was going..

Yeah South is technical, and the easiest way to ride it is not braking... Or only braking on the grip points to check your speed!
If you come back and can make a weekend of it there are loads of natural routes too. Although I have known people do the borrowdale bash (sneaky walla crag instead of road, Ashness bridge, watendlath, honister pass, castle crag, cat bells, Whinlatter pass and Whinlatter trails). Bash route is about 16/18 miles, up Whinlatter pass is 4, then you would have you 12 or so miles from red route and 4 miles back down to Keswick!so 35 miles-ish? With about 4000ft of climbing.

Most of our away days will be weekends as these 'normal' folk work Monday to Friday. Would be awesome to be shown some routes! I'm always very nervous about exploring in unfamiliar places, especially somewhere like the Lake District, due to the fear of getting myself lost. We'll have to give you a shout the next time we venture North Thanks very much.

I definitely saw it,i think it was at the start of the south loop but could be wrong but it certainly reminded me of you

Whenever you fancy the northwest, availability permitting I would be happy to show you around Hebden bridge way and Calderdale, Darwen or rivington or gisburn forest (can squeeze lee quarry and gisburn into one day). theres a few places localism and further afield I would like to tick off. There's a nice looking ride around Dunsop bridge with a couple of great descents that can be combined with gisburn in the afternoon. I'd like to do some rides around sedbergh and ingleborough area, the peaks and the lakes.

If your driving from the midlands to visit Gisburn then I would look to combine with something else or you have a 6 to 7 hour round trip for 2 hours riding without doing bits twice. There's this natural route which is supposed to be very good but you need good weather, gisburns also a lot better after a dry spell it's a mess at the moment, Dunsop bridge is kind of on the way and only 20 minutes or so away. www.mbr.co.uk/routes/northern-england/dunsop-fell-trough-bowland-gps-route-download-323913 Or you could do lee quarry and then it's around an hour to gisburn, a circuit of lee and cragg quarry is around 2 hours tops and isn't overly taxing so after some lunch and the drive over you should be fine for gisburn.
