Took some time out this afternoon for an early evening ride as things were quiet and the sun started to shine ..don't know why but I just wasn't expecting it to be so wet under wheel ! The original idea was to do Deadwater trails at Kielder ..but things got worse the closer I got ..until within a mile of getting there it was tipping down and the top of the fell was covered in mist ..so headed back down the road to Sidwood A few pics

Nice mate! it's really surprising how quickly the trails can go from dusty to 'clarty' was out yesterday and it was better than that by us but still a tad moist. What's a 'bastle' btw?

In the days of Border Reivers ..when maurauding Scots and Englishman used to thieve , rape & & pillage on both sides of the border ( fun times ) ...a Bastle was a raised stone built dwelling where the family used to live above and the cattle were kept below to protect them from raiders There are better examples ...I'll find some ...

Cheers mate - I'm a bit of a history geek and read a book once all about the reivers and those times - found it fascinating, made the Old Wild West sound like Disney!

There you go Pez This one is less than a mile away from my pic ( as the crow flies ) ..and just along the road from the other building I took pics of .. www.english-heritage.org.uk/visit/places/black-middens-bastle-house/Our family name ( Hodgson) originates from those times ..though we have over the years become a little more civilised ( some would say ! )

On a bit of a tangent - I love the history of the Roman wall and would love to ride it one day (bucket list) but I've been told it's mostly a road riding route - is that right Hodgers?

Sorry mate yes, Hadrians. I'd love to do that, stopping off at some of the wall forts for a mooch about too. Scenery is stunning along parts of the wall.

Ahh, it makes sense now!
I pass 'tourist signs' for it when going along the A69 around Carlisle way. I like a bit of history myself but can never get into books etc, I need to actually go somewhere and see something for it to go in!
Not too sure about riding it but if you ever fancy an away day oop nurth for a walk along some of it and other touristy things, gis a shout! Wouldn't mind a look myself and with you being a bit of a nerd, you could ejumacate me too..

Unfortunately yes ..purely a walking route ..a great pity as it would make a great bike ride . I wouldn't like to ride the road ..as you well know most Roman roads were dead straight and this one is no exception..it's a "b " road but still gets a fair amount of traffic ..which for the most part way exceed the national speed limit !! You are both right by the way ..Hadrians Wall is it's " Sunday best " name ...but it is more commonly known as the Roman Wall... There were plans afoot to even limit the numbers walking the route due to the amount of erosion ...and as a World Heritage Site ..I reckon you would have your nuts removed if you were caught riding it !

Jay Next time you cross over the A69 from Carlisle ...take the road off at Greenhead and follow it all the way to Heddon on the Wall ..not only is it more scenic ( you are driving along the course of the wall itself ...but it is quieter and quicker than the A69 ..which you can rejoin at Heddon...

Heddon? Is that where they built that bypass?

The village is by-passed by the A 69 ..but it's easy to rejoin it there .

As has been said before ..we would be more than happy to show you a ride or two if you wanted to spend some time up here ..you could split your time walking parts of the wall one day ..going for a ride the next ..it's within half an hour for most of our group to get to and plenty of accommodation close by ...

Hey, I never realised what Sidwood looked like in daylight, it's quite pretty really ;-) Except those steps look way too easy. But a lot spookier by lamplight.
Also, Hadrians Wall footpath may be strictly verboten to bikes but there are routes on BW's within a mile or so north and south which are still certainly allowable to be called 'Roman Wall Country', and I am happy to count myself among the legion of local troops happy to show peeps the glory's of empires long fallen, but hoping they rather more enjoy the local glories of the fabulous landscapes. :-D
