Hodgy with your knowledge of bothys around Kielder do you know if theres a way to ride from Solway, Gretna through kielder, through the Northumberland national park to Alnwick or Berwick, kind of across Adrians wall, making us of bothys every 40/50 miles or so?
Some homework for you there.

I just checked in simple cycling terms it looks doable over two hard or three steady days. Trouble is it seems to go through a strange place where some nutters live, Bellingham or something like that. There must be an off road way, not sure if this is the same as the coast to coast or not, I think that starts further down the coast and skirts across Whinlatter and across the lakes.
It must be a flat route as its only around 3500ft climbing for 106/110 miles.

You could try looking at the Reivers Route ..but that's not one that I have any real knowledge of .. A new route was opened up last year which was the brainchild of Ted Liddle of Tyne Valley MTB ..a champion of opening up " lost " public rights of way ..the Sandstone Way which runs from Hexham through to Berwick which takes in the second part of your journey and is well sign posted ..although most people ride it the other way ...that alone is 120 miles ...the c2c route goes coast to coast starting as you say further down from Workington or Whitehaven to Roker ( Sunderland ) or Tynemouth... There is not really a route that follows Hadrians Wall unless you want a road trip ...

Yeah steer clear of Bellingham ..they are a queer breed .. Unfortunately ..the Sandstone Way passes through here ..advice is to pedal fast and don't stop to speak to anyone !

I will be there - back to my youth when we regularly stayed at a fab bothy called Back Hill o the Bush near the silver flow marsh in the Galloway hills and as we all had nae money ( what's changed!) we stayed for a week - there were no rules then Good idea to take a bivi bag either for yourself or to allow us by unanimous agreement to evict the champion snorer in it to the bike shed! Should be great fun especially as we have a mobile bar at our disposal thanks to Mrs H My kind of adventure!!

Kirky if you are coming to Alnwick/ Alnmouth then I can help - tent in field for up to 6 ( you might even get fed) Only 3miles from Alnmouth station if you are going back to start by train

I'd better buy a bivi bag now then ! Although on the snoring front the noise that comes out of Mr.G is industrial compared to my gentle offerings ... I knew you would be all over this Colin ..I'm also looking forward to it ..and those coming from afar will get to visit trails that mtb visitors to Kielder are blissfully unaware of ..

Not good news ..... Stopping at The Green on our ride on Saturday afternoon we stopped at this bothy to find it occupied ...both fires were on and it was almost tropical inside . It turned out that the person staying there was a bloke called Jason ..the bothy " warden " ...in so much that he looks out for the upkeep on this particular dwelling . Telling of our plans for next year ..transpires that over the Easter weekend a large group has been coming from Derby for years ..Gaz / Jack's mates ? ...so the only option would be the weekend after ..plus I will need to sweet talk the local farmer prior to going regarding the vehicle transporting our gear ..apparently if he sees any vehicles heading that way he puts his own padlock on the barrier ! Very naughty on an FC gate ( which doesn't pose a problem with regard to their own lock) The other bit of bad news and I confirmed this personally ..is that no vehicles are allowed at all to Wainhope Bothy ( the second nights accomodation ) from March through to September due to it's close proximity to the Osprey nesting site ... So a little bit of a re-think is needed ! Watch this space ....

Ok ...so I have had a re-think ! Still dependant on one or two things ... The first one being the date ..this will now have to take place over the weekend of Friday 8th -Sunday 10th April due to the expected arrival of a large group from Derbyshire on the Easter bank holiday ..the previous week . Wainhope bothy is OUT ...due to the nesting activities of those large winged fish thieves ... It can however still be a bothy weekend ..but one which is sampling both the rough and the smooth .. The rough being the Green on the Friday ( after visiting the farmer re his padlock ) ...the smooth being this place on the Saturday ..which unfortunately will involve a cost . To keep that cost down we would need 8 riders ( £20.00each) www.tarset-tor.co.uk/This is still en-route ..but a little further than intended ..which makes the Sunday shorter but that is no bad thing for folks who have travelled from afar .. I have not yet looked into the availability of a bothy at Tarset Tor ..wanting instead to canvass the opinion of those who were originally interested . My missus would still do the kit transfer . Thoughts please ... www.tarset-tor.co.uk/cms/accommodation.php

That accomadation looks great Neil, a bit more luxurious than the bothy so is good by me, I just have to work out how it fits with any holiday plans we may have and I ll confirm in the near future.

Just thought I would update this thread and get things moving ... There is now a definite date for this based on the fact that historically a walking group from Derbyshire have used it over the Easter Bank Holiday .The dates still fall within the school holiday period but on the last weekend ... Friday 8th to Sunday 10th April 2016. The number of riders are limited to eight . There have also been some enforced changes due to Wainhope Bothy being inaccessible to vehicles at this time due to Ospreys nesting close to it ..so we will now be mixing rough with smooth and using a luxury modern Bothy on the Saturday Tarset Tor ..the cost of which is £192.00 p.n divided by eight = £ 24.00 and having checked today is still available .The link for this is above but I will add it again at the bottom of this thread. I would like to have this booked as soon as possible on a first come first served basis but no later than mid January subject to the second nights accomodation being available at Tarset Tor . "Luggage" transfer between the two bothies will still be made by my good lady ..and everything else as above in previous posts This now makes the Saturday a longer day ..but you will for quite a chunk be travelling on tracks that only a few locals have used so there is a real wilderness feel to the riding . Friday is all about getting there ( for any coming from afar I will meet you at an as yet to be arranged location and guide you in to Stonehaugh where the vehicles will be parked and your kit transferred to the first Bothy ..we then have a short 6km ride to the Bothy where we make ourselves comfortable for the evening ( you should have your evening meal prior to meeting me ) . Sunday is a shortish day which should have you back at your cars by mid afternoon after more excellent little used trails . Should we not have the required number of riders by mid January then I will unfortunately have to scrap this as an idea . Full ..non refundable payment of £ 24.00 will be required once we have reached the full complement of riders ... Finer details to be given nearer the time of the ride . This will suit those wanting to sample the area prior to the Kielder 101 Hope you can make it ! www.tarset-tor.co.uk/

I appreciate you letting me know Glynn... I'm having difficulty mustering up any enthusiasm for this at the moment ..I think everyone's mindset is on how the weather is right now ..and can't see beyond that . I sent an email around all of our local group a couple of weeks back and haven't had a single response ..which is more than a little disappointing ...after almost everyone said that they would be interested in doing this when we visited a Bothy last year . I have put a time limit on this of mid January and then I'm calling it off ...as I don't think the second night's accomodation will be available beyond this point ..and we need 8 committed riders to get the best rate ( £24.00 pp) . I'm getting to the stage where I also can't be arsed to come up with and organise ideas like this anymore ..a shame as it would be a very different mountain biking experience ...

i understand what your saying hodgy, its easy for anyone to say they're interested off the top of their head (myself included)but not always able to committ for all sorts of reasons, and very disappointing when people start to pull out. it would be a brilliant weekend of riding and roughing it, maybe if it was a bit further into the summer it might have been more successful, but harder to find vacencies..........i dont know. i hope you get enough riders to make this happen.

No problem Gaz ...at least I know . From my point of view ..I am perfectly fine about people being unable to come ..these things either happen or they don't ...as long as I know ..and that's from the point of view of being able to book the accomodation and not keeping people hanging on .. It's always hard to enthuse people who are coming from afar as they haven't the faintest idea as to the quality of the riding ...

Just to confirm I am definitely out of this one Neil - on days the Saturday and Sunday - which is a bloody shame as after the Monday I've got 9 days off! typical!
Oh well - enjoy, sounds a great adventure and hope you get the last 3.
