Make that 6 ! Dave T has also confirmed ..although he might have to join us on the Saturday morning as he may be at work on the Friday evening ... Jean has been offered alternative arrangements ..which are under consideration ( ? ) as she quite rightly has reservations about staying in the same room as 7 (?) hairy arsed blokes ... 2 more places left ..it's starting to look good ...

It is Pez ...I have always wanted to stay in one..and if we survive I could well extend this to other Bothys in more remote locations using tag-a-longs in somewhere like the Highlands ... It's easier to try this closer to home and having my b/h around to transport kit is a bit of a cheat ..but a welcome one ! The only slight regret I have is that none of you guys from outside the area can make it ..because the riding itself is going to be superb ..at least Lee Dodds will get to sample trails that he won't have ridden before ..and that will give myself and the rest of the group a bit of a buzz as we have been " developing " the majority of this route over the course of the last two years ... Hope to show some of you around another time ...

Having canvassed behind the scenes with regard to what everyone wanted to do regarding "eats " on the Saturday evening ..( chinese takeaway at the Bothy or a bar meal) ..the majority decision was a bar meal .. A table(s) has been booked for 7.00pm at the Hollybush Inn..in Greenhaugh..a remote country pub approx 2 miles away ..I've even arranged musical entertainment ! ( apparently there is live music that evening ). Not sure how we are getting there and back yet ! www.hollybushinn.net/Edit: My wonderful missus has volunteered for the job ! She might even join us for the meal ...

Well this is getting really close ...need to meet up with Graham to put the route to bed ..so to speak . Further news as far as staying at the Green the " rough" bothy on the Friday night ...as far as I'm aware there will be just the 4 of us ..Graham ,Colin & Russell..Dave is working late and to be honest I haven't heard from Lee in a good while ( so will pm him ) . So Dave & Lee to park up at Stonehaugh on the Saturday morning ..with some groupies who are coming along for the ride on the Saturday ( I'm still not sure if Jean is staying on the Saturday ?) ...obviously Jean being one,Ant&Ingrid and Jaco too ... We will sort the finer details out nearer the time ...

Yeah Bob ...that's the thrill for me too ...this is my first time in a bothy . If it's deemed a success then no reason why we can't do it again next year ..maybe you could join us then ?

...should have said ...the trails you saw featured on that programme ...a lot of the maintenance work that goes into them is undertaken by Kielder Trail Reavers...the main players being Dave,Jean,Graham,Russell & Ian Bell..who form a big chunk of our riding group . Were it not for them the trails would be in a hell of a state..and they don't get half the credit they deserve We won't be on any of the purpose built mtb trails on this trip though ....
To Reave ..is to break up ( as in groundworks) Not to be confused with Border Reivers...who were thoroughly nasty barstewards who stole and plundered and killed mainly for sheep & cattle .. Funnily enough the Hodgson name is associated with these nice gentlemen ...originating in the Dumfries area . Surely the tartan strain must have been bred through by now though ...lol

Out with Graham tomorrow checking another section of bridleway as yet unridden by either of us in the hope that it can be included on the ride next week . Ian Bell rode it last Thursday and reckons it works ..so time to see for ourselves . It's all coming together quite nicely ...and I'm on maximum brownie points for apart from Glentress last weekend all I have done for the last week & a bit is decorate . There is even going to be a homemade curry waiting for us when we get back to discuss the final route we will be taking. Such is the wealth of trails both old and new the hardest part will be what to leave out .. The route I have in mind will be roughly 25 miles each day ..but want to pick Graham's brains to see if he has anything better ! Of course a pint will be obligatory afterwards too ... Report & pics to follow!

A short but good ride with Graham yesterday on what eventually turned out to be testing conditions ( wet & windy ) Semi successful in terms of the trails we checked out ...some new discoveries and some disappointment.. Most of the stuff we were checking had been ridden by Ian last week in some capacity ..we were going at it from the opposite direction to see if it married up... This first section looks a little lumpy ...which it is for the first few metres ..but then becomes rideable ..however for the sake of a few hundred metres and the fact that the direction we would ride it in would be upwards plus the fact that the bridleway turns into a forest road ...it was binned for next week Moving on to another section which Ian had described as testing from the direction which he had ridden it ..we again looked at it from the opposite direction to find it non-existent! Unless Ian has invented a hover bike ! We are going to have to capture him ..bundle him in to the back of a van ..find a dark cellar ...strap him to a chair and torture him for the truth .. Testing..Yeah! Rideable ...my arse! So disappointed..we turned back the way we came but remembered a track that we hadn't been going to check out ..which doesn't feature on any current maps ..but does link in to a track which is shown as a dead end ...it's slightly moist Great fun though until we came upon some windblown trees ...however not to be deterred Graham produced a pruning saw from his medical kit .. which he always carries in case any emergency amputations are required while out riding ...not something he is qualified for but enjoys doing all the same( the amputations that is )... To be continued...just been handed a cuppa Having pruned a few branches we were able to continue on our way ...and this section will be included next week ! Moving on to another section which Ian had ridden last week which involved tracks running along both the Chirdon and Clint burn(s)..the first one he described as fantastic until it ran out ..which it was ...but he could also see it from the track alongside the Clint burn where the two streams converged...and felt that a stream crossing could link the two. Now I'm no killjoy...and in the height of summer on a red hot day that could be a possibility...and being game enough both Graham and myself tromped through some very rough ground by the side of the burn looking for a spot to cross ..but eventually concluded that unless we wanted freezing cold water all the way up to our nickynackynoos ...we would give it a miss. So thwarted once again!! More pics to follow ..pb playing up !

This pic on track after pruning section This a fantastic track above the Chirdon burn which after a couple of km's just runs out.. We did find a section along the Clint Burn which will link in nicely to next week's ride and will travel better in the opposite direction to which we rode it So all in all not a bad day ... A couple of pints and a homemade curry rounded it off nicely for us ...

Looks like you had fun in the woods Neil, looking forward to next weekend. Hopefully Graham won't be needing his pruning saw for any operations, the lass we saw at Newcastleton on Monday might of needed his skills though, see link www.eladvertiser.co.uk/news/Woman-airlifted-to-hospital-after-mountain-bike-crash-36a77107-63ab-4cd4-815c-a6062d23b165-ds Jean reckons the Red has some Black sections at the moment due to lack of maintenance and I'm inclined to agree with her. I think she had just slipped on the bridge and fallen badly, I don't think speed was a factor at all, very unlucky. Hope she is recovering.

I like days out like that, just wandering about checking out places never seen before. You can't expect to find many 'perfect 10's' lying about undiscoverd, but then again in this part of the world there isn't a small army of bikers around looking. Just us owld farts. T'will be good to join a few of them up into a weekends big riding... Can't wait, hi ho Silver awayyyyy. But never mind the amputations, it'll be bloody oxygen and defibrillators in the backpack soon enough :-(

Really looking forward to this ride, I think I tried they dead end path a few years ago, It will be interesting to see what you have found as I thought I had that area pretty much covered but it looks like you trail hounds have discovered a lot more
