we all know Andy had a bad crash on Monday I wished he had a full face helmet on but he didn't ... So suffered a lot of nasty cuts to his face . One thing I will say hlis he had a new poc helmet and it probably saved is life people that don't ride with helmets need to think wot they are doing !!! Ive thought long and hard about posting this pic up so if you don't like it sorry but I would like you all to see it .., so when you see a bellend with out one show them this pic I'm going to start using my bell one more now and just take the chin guard off on climbs if I get to hot ., pmus im going to make sure I carry a first aid pack you don't realise when you will need it ... Plus a silver blanket to wrap round them ..

I saw a girl with no helmet riding hands free on the way to work this morning almost in the dark with no effing lights. Almost pulled over to tell her to sort it out!
I always carry a first aid kit, silver blanket, whistle (in case I go over an edge or something), tic remover and intend to do a first aid course in the next few months. Had to use the first aid kit a few months back when my mate came off on a small jump, really nasty gash in his arm and blood everywhere, no where near as bad as Andy's but still not nice to deal with.

I agree completely with regard to wearing a helmet..in my eyes they should be made compulsory .. People also wonder as to why my back pack is always so heavy ..it's because I carry what you have just mentioned there Gaz a first aid kit & foil blanket and everything else that I think I might need in an emergency ( Dave T even carries an emergency lightweight shelter ! ) An emergency situation doesn't just happen on all day epics in the wild ..as yesterday's accident unfortunately proved .. I'm glad to hear of Andy's improvement and hope it continues to full health ..

Thats taken a big impact. I have a light bracket on my helmet and looking at these photos makes me wonder if its safe or if it could cause a problem on impact. Also we do carry a first aid kit on normal rides but places like bpw and uplift days, stilecop its usually kept in the car, it sounds a pretty daft idea now.

Yes couple of the lads had left there phones in the car .. We was fools as we didn't take the emergency number down on the board ... I looked at it and thought nar we don't need that ffs 15 min later stood on a hill side trying to give one of your best mates first aid ...

Places like that u just think I'm so close to the car if anything happens its just down the road. I think we all will be re-thinking things like this. Even learning first aid doesnt stop the panic seeing a friend/loved one in need of treatment.

I always carry a first aid kit - top tip though, once you've used it fill it back up. My youngest went OTB not so long back and my FA kit was low as I'd used it a few weeks before - very low on sterile wipes. Ended up using my camelbak to clean her cuts. My phone always stays in my pack or pocket. I'm lucky that work have paid for my FA training - only First Aid at Work but better than nothing. Might see about going on the outdoor course and paying for it. That helmet is a mess - it's hopefully done it's job though. With regard to light/camera mounts I'd be inclined to keep helmets clear of them. Some speculation that a gopro mount contributed to Michael Schumachers injuries.

On the subject of first aid kits, make sure you have a decent one. The one I had had very few items of actual use. Things we needed, like gauze pads, were tiny, designed for small cuts, not the injuries Andy had sustained. I'm definitely going to be making something to prepare for those injuries.

I've got the British Red Cross First aid app on my phone, it's a great little app that covers most of the things we will come across. And it's FREE.
Luckily I'm first aid trained with work and I did battlefield first aid when I was in the army, not saying I'd be brilliant but it's better than nothing

Only just hit me that this all occurred on the BPW forum ride... Jesus it's sounds bad, hope he has a speedy recovery.
It was bad enough when I found a rider on the floor who had stacked it going up a rut. She was airlifted away. If it's someone you know it would be even worse. Well done to you guys who all seemed to help and act as well as you could.
Everyone should be riding with a first aid kit at minimum. I have one in the pack and one in the car just incase. That helmets done its job, I need to look at replacing mine soon as Its nearly 2 years old now. I don't think I'll be riding with a GoPro head mount either thinking about it
As I said, hope he pulls through ok

Thats really taken a whack! Does make you think, may start wearing my full face more :s Terms of kit I have a basic one but as others have said an I found out, it lacks decent sized bandages. Does have a foil blanket though, but defiantly going to look at beefing it up.
Whistle wise worth checking your pack, Evocs for example have one built into the chest buckle.

that lid has taken some impact! I never ride without my lid for fear of such and accident and like others have said always ride with a mini survival kit just in case. Might be overkill but as I mainly ride alone feel its better to be safe than sorry. my kit contains (all light and small), foil blanket/Bivvy bag, whistle, a paracord bracelet, mini maglite, first aid kit that contains a couple off paracetamol/ neurophen plus, steri strips, bandage, tape, plasters, steri wipes, gauze/melonin pads, triangular bandage, wound wash and a couple of safety pins. If I ever have an off up the hills on my own I hope this might get me through until I am found (if I am still together enough to use any of it).

Certainly food for thought!
I always wear a helmet but currently carry bugger all in the way of first aid, survival gear and often ride on my own at night in the middle of nowhere!
Never given it second though until today so just ordered a basic first aid kit and foil blankets etc.

Mine also is not a " branded " kit . It was actually given to me by the FC on a trail building day when a funded first aid course was also offered ..which regretfully I was unable to attend. It contains very basic stuff ...a medium bandage for a sling, sterile wipes , disposable gloves , sticky plasters , lint pads , a re-suss tube ...that's about it ..but as mentioned I also carry a foil blanket separately and an old fashioned waterproof poncho which while unused folds right down to nothing.. Not much but better than nothing ..all in a small pouch which sits in the bottom of my back pack ...

It's worth taking a first aid course I have first aid at work which covers me for working on building sites so really we have to be prepared for most things I never pass the opertunity to retake the course ( not that I am lowed to pull out ) I just think that you never now when you need it . But I think the one most important thing is to take the emergency number of the trail .
A lesson for us all I think guys

I think off the shelf options are not the best. The below article by mountain rescue explains what bit are good to carry and why. Then just pop all this in a exped water proof bag. www.ukclimbing.com/articles/page.php?id=3593

Gaz just let me know about this. Get well soon mate, sounds a shocker. If there's anything I can do, the littlest thing let me know. My main power comes on the railway rather than anything useful, but even if it's getting away to London for a night on store better let me know. Chin-up mate.
