this is quite often something that crops up in conversation on group rides. theres always the saying 'pace of ride =the pace of the last man'. in other words no one will be left behind no matter what. now I agree with that, which is why, when I post up a forum ride for a group of riders, I will always give an indication of what to expect, with comments such as ,expect tough climbs' or 'don't forget your climbing legs' or whatever. it can be very demoralising if your really struggling at the back (I know what it feels like, I sometimes ride with a great bunch of lads who are extremely fit and I am ALWAYS at the back) it can also be demoralising for those at the front standing around waiting for the rest especially on a cold winter ride. what are your views on different fitness/ability riders on a group ride?

My view is that if on a group ride, your pace is set by the slowest rider!
If I organise a group ride, It's always a social thing rather than a record breaking session.
I never expect to be flying everywhere on group rides although, I always put my foot down for singletrack sections and downhill bits!
I don't mind waiting at the bottom or waiting at the top of climbs..
On a group ride, I expect it. It doesn't bother me in the slightest.

i always think group rides are more of a social outing than a strava smashing meet up,although I've been on so called social rides when the trail whippets have shot off on their own never to be seen again.

I agree with you both...my motto always hs been to go at the pace of the slowest rider.. which is me on the climbs.. Not so much on the down. Part of this is down to the weight of my bike and possibly down to the weight of me also... I could probably shed a stone if I am being honest about if !.... Although I always finish an all day ride stronger than most. It just takes a while for me to warm up ! On the former web site I used to frequent ( Kielder Trail Reavers) we had a subsection for organising rides which was headed just that " Social Rides" ..and they were Saying that if anyone new was not happy with the pace ...I certainly would not feel offended if they wanted to rattle on..I'm out for the day and don't care when I get finished!

I agree with all of the above, in respect it's always nice to meet a bunch of fellas with a similar pace, or more social attitude... Towards biking.... If I met up with a Strava Asshole, and he takes the urine.... I'd take his bike off him, and beat him up with it...

im not really talking about strava riders.if they are purly out to beat records they should be riding alone.but one persons steady ride can be a completely different pace to another persons steady ride.

Agreed, and as long as your a social guy, and willing to support the "not so fast" then it makes for a good day... I'm by no means fast... However I've got better, by riding with fitter riders... They've always waited for me, and given me guidance.... Usually as I repair all their bikes for them!...

This used to be the case for me, although now it's a fairly even playing field. I can climb quite quickly as i can keep my balance and get over technical bits easily. My mate on the other hand is like a mountain goat.. just plods up all the climbs at a slower walking pace, but he gets up everything.
We usually get to the top about the same time though.
On the subject of group rides though, if you go out and suddenly aim to smash your PR on sections then you can fuck off, I'm riding with you to be social. Saying that all the downhill sections, go as fast as you like, as long as you wait at the end.

It's good to hear that many don't mind riding with the slower guys. I always ride on my own because I've got fat! Might have to tag along to a couple of group rides and see how it goes though.

group rides for me are as follows, potter along the slow bits, piss taking, having a laugh/banter etc, get to the fast bits, go as fast as YOU can and then wait at the bottom for more banter and crash reports. repeat this all day till your knackered then head to the cafe.

Group rides, expect to take longer the more join, more chance of injuries, need for breaks for a breather as people exert and tire at different times and of course more chance of mechanicals.
sounds like a list of issue and could be off putting but the benefits are firstly good banter, back up in case of injury or bike issues and input and knowledge maybe of different routes. Also may often give motivation to climb that hill that you may normally push up when nobody's watching.

I ride with a group that don't hang about. We will always wait for each other at appropriate places. Strava segments on the rides are generally known and we each cane it like fuck and then wait for the rest / me to catch up.... It's not a problem.

This subject is one that I feel is at the heart of mountain biking. All the group rides, whether it be with 3 or 33 riders the attitude has been the same. We start together and we finish together. When I hear I won't come out as I will soow you down gets the same reply. Were not here to break records were here for a good days riding with some great company. And when you fall off at the end of a section there is more people to laugh at you then help you up. I love mountain biking, I do.

i agree with all the posts here, if i get up and decide to hit the trails i don't think how long it will take me etc i just make sure ive got what i need for the ride and were i can get a coffee if im out with a group the skillz and fitness obviously vary, some can read the lines better on trails than others and are less challenged with rocky descents than the next rider ....we all hate climbs that's a fact but to get down you gotta go up ive got off and pushed my bike when others have rode past (bastards) .......but one thing remains the same were all out to put a grin on our face

I actually like the climbs. It's what I ride for. (God's honest truth) same ere. climbing is just part of the whole thing. im not sure if iv given out the wrong vibes with my first post. I always wait for the ones at the back and have always been waited for by the guys at the front. but my point was that IMO, group rides are very much about the banter, but also the ride, but if there is too much difference in skill and fitness it can spoil the ride for the whole group. if everyone finishes the ride with a huge grin and good feeling, then that's what its all about.

Forum rides should should have the ride type mentioned before hand I ve been out with Glynn a few times now and it's always been a social thing. Ride chat ride chat nick my sandwich chat and ride a bit more If people want to go out and smash strava times that's all good but make sure everybody else on the ride fancies it to.... It could be a bit off putting for a newbie if they are left behind
