Hi guys, Thought I'd share my current wheels with you. I know Carrera's aren't everyone's cup of tea but for the money some of them are pretty good. I use to work in Halfords many moons ago when I was a student - suffice to say I've seen some of the rubbish they churned out years ago... Anyway back to my current ride. Got this in July to replace my Saracen Element2 that was purchased to keep my fitness going when I picked up a running injury. After a few runs over the Chase on the Saracen I realised I was either going to spend a fortune on upgrades or get a new ride. Well Halfords were selling off the 26" Carrera range to make way for the new 650b range - add in a British Cycling discount and an online discount code it seemed a no brained based on a What Mountain Bike review. Fairly well spec'd with SRAM running gear, Avid brakes (again not everyone's favourite but so far no probs) and 120mm Suntour Raidon air forks Only change I've made so far is a set of CarbonCycles Exotic flats pedals. Considering a dropper post and a more comfy saddle! Here it is after the BHF Peak District MTB Challenge a couple of weeks back:

I wouldnt be ashamed of owning the Carrera Fury, good bikes that get good reviews and for the money have a good spec

Good bike mate - especially if you got it cheap, good solid spec and I like those exotic pedals!

Nice looking bike.
Got to ask but are you really called Dirk Pitt or are you a massive Clive Cussler fan?

Cheers guys. jimbo I'm a massive Cussler fan - I blame him for getting me into diving which I sadly had to give up for medical reasons. Now that's a hobby you can spend a fortune on!!

What's the issue with Avids? Haven't had any issued with them, bite and progression seems pretty good (admittedly I have no experience of any other hydraulic brakes).
Agree that the Carrera is a decent bike (frames are made by Merida I think) and as you say it's Halfords that people seem to have the issue with - although things seem to have gotten better recently.
Pedals are great - apart from when they smash you in the calf/shin - coupled with my Teva shoes there's plenty of grip.

Update 07-12-2014 Added a few bits. Enduroguard fitted to save cleaning crud out of the steerer and my fork seals: QR seat clamp fitted for various reasons (yes it's a Superstar one - sorry!!!): Big shiney cage bolts replaced with low profile nylon versions which look less obtrusive: Got some Nukeproof Warhead 760 bars to fit and some new (Superstar - sorry again!!!) grips. Hoping to do those next week.

Superstar stuff is great for when you need to replace a part, only problem is, is it opens up a whole world of upgrading parts.
Superstar seatpost was nice, how about a cromag one? Or how about some floating 203mm brake rotors..
Bike is looking good though man! But for the love of God, replace the avids..

Have just put some Kevlar pads in mine and they're still working OK.
Will keep them until they need changing.

Nowt wrong with Avid's when they work. Mine had loads of power. As soon as they start playing up though it's game over. No amount of the overly complicated bleed process will resurrect them. At this point, spend £80 on a set of Deores and be happy for another two years, until they break!

Weighed my bike last night - 13.4kg.
Haven't fitted the NP bars yet or the carbon seat post.
Hoping to get the weight down a bit.
Although still 2kg lighter than my old Saracen!!!

I've got some luggage scales - just hung them from the garage roof and hung the bike off it.

Fitted my carbon fibre seat post last night. As it's only a cheap/second hand boardman one I wasn't expecting much weight saving. As it turned out there was zero saving (what you might call 'carbon neutral' lol). Ali post Carbon post Have moved shifter and brakes around to see how it feels. Might change my bars next week to my wider Nukeproof ones. Also have a set of Mavic Crossrides on route too!

Needed to change my brake pads tonight. So decided to put the set of Mavic Crossrides on that I got a while ago. Just the wider Nukeproof bars and KS eTen dropper to fit now.
