Hi all after some advice there is a similar thread on here but didn't want to hijack it just bought a mega am frame with cane creek shock and want to build something a bit more capable uphill than my current mega I know they are not ideally suited to climbing but any improvement will help . Also what should I realisticly look at price wise for a build i had a figure of around 2.5k in mind is this reasonable with good quality components.
Thanks for any help its my first project of this type so sorry if it's a little vague .
keith.

If your after improved climbing maybe consider a 2 position fork, 160/140 for weighting the front on climbs more
But if you want to lighten the bike up for some climbing ability you will be smashing your budget
Light/strong/cheap you can get two but not all 3

I did mean 2.5k after the frame and shock I'm hoping to get around 1200 for my current mega and put the rest to it myself frame is already purchased what would you say is a reasonable figure .
Thanks for the help

Thanks for the help 2.5k after frame is more than enough for a very good build, what made you go frame only though instead of complete?

2.5k will get decent components... dont go for x01 1x11 at that price .... spend the majority on forks brakes and wheels...

I couldnt afford the full bike without a struggle an I didn't like the components on it so as a compromise I thought I would do it this way and make it a bit unique to me quite fancied doing a build for ages to be honest

I would build it up with Pikes rather than Fox 36's for the slightly lighter weight and the £££ saving. Would make the budget a bit less stretched for everything else then.

I'd agree pikes if you're looking for the best price/performance or on a tighter budget

Bollocks - stealth is still the way all us cool kids go. Keith I can personally tell you the dual position Pikes (150-120) work brilliantly. I am a terrible climber, I only get up hills via the gift of moan power having the option to drop the front end to a 120mm is a Godsend, honestly - especially on techy climbs. Stops me tending to go over backwards so much. I know Fox do the same but for the extra money for a Fox I honestly think you are paying for bling and name alone - I know for a fact that at my level any difference in performance would be unnoticeable (it is probably miniscule in any case). The Pikes are great.

I'd agree with you Perry, Fox is all about Premium bling! Performance differences are noticeable but not enough as to justify paying another 40% if you have a budget to stick too!

I'd love a set of Pikes but don't like the black stanchions, that's all.
I've been a RS man since I started riding and only switched to Fox because of the black stanchions..
They look mint on stealthy bikes but, in my opinion, crap on anything else!
I've noticed a difference in performance between RS and Fox but nothing to write home about.
If RS made Pikes with NORMAL coloured stanchions, I'd get some for my 456 in a heart beat.

I haven't got the experience of some (most) of you lads and apart from the 100mm Fox 32's on my Cube (they were great forks) the only other Fox long travel forks I tried were on the test ride of the Granite Chief, which wasn't long enough for me to be able to judge against the Pikes. If you are racing/doing real gnarly stuff then maybe the performance difference is worth it - I'd suggest if you are a trail centre mong like me though - save the money and get the Pikes, as long as you can live with the black stanchions

I actually like the black stanchions I've ordered the frame in black and ideally would take the decals off if I can . It's the chain set that's causing me most trouble there's so many options 1x11 setup is what I would like to try but being used to 2x10 not sure if it would suit me

To be honest I'm not sure on the pikes or the 1x11 but I was certain I didn't want it in neon green and I was going to have a cane creek rear shock plus I want to build it myself as a project I know Itwon't be a unique bike as there will be loads about but it will be a little different and I hope I enjoy the build
