Base Layers Is it worth shedding out loads of money for them , now the winter is here .. ?
If yes how much is it worth spending , I plan to ride most of this winter , to try and keep what little fitness level up as much as I can ..
what would you recommend .
Thanks mr b

Not mountain bike specific as such but I use Helly Hensen & Berghaus base layers both short sleeved. Sometimes ( lots of times ) if it is not too cold I will wear only a base layer under a trail jacket ..nowt worse than being too hot

Yes, it's definitely worth getting a proper wicking base layer but you don't need to spend a fortune.
Helly Hansen is one of the best I've used but I've even got some cheapo stuff that works ok. I bought mine ages ago but I'll see what I can find and update later. (possibly Aldi or Decathlon) If you like you can borrow one of my HH tops and try it out.
There used to a be a Ron Hill factory shop at Sutton in Ashfield where you could get some top brand stuff cheap (with the name tags snipped off). There is still a RAB factory shop near Alfreton which opens part time. I'll ask my running mates tomorrow night.
Base layers have to work really hard when fell running as you can go from sweating on a hard climb to freezing cold winds in an instant.

I've never bothered with baselayers personally. If I'm cold, I put my jacket on, If I'm warm I take it off! The only thing baselayer-ish I have is glove liners because I hate having cold hands.. I can't hold me fag proper with cold hands

Here you are bud. www.decathlon.co.uk/C-308325-mid-layers-and-base-layersI got Mountain Equipment Polar-tech one from the Ron Hill shop a couple of years ago and I've not worn it ' cos it was too big. You know how it is when you spot a real steal and you just have to have it. If I can find it I'll bring it along next time we ride and if you like it's yours for a bargain ten quid. No prob if you don't though.

Anything merino mate, got a trusty 3 year old Endura merino long sleeve that goes under a normal trail shirt or on really cold days under a soft shell - it's all I've ever needed.

Aldi recently had some merino base layers in and some blokes I know were pleased with them. Problem is knowing when they'll be in again.
Another source of good merino stuff is the John Smedley factory shop at Lea near Matlock. My mate who did the Yukon Ultra Marathon used their stuff.
BTW you can do the Yukon on a bike, running, skis or with dogs. It was cancelled a couple of years ago when the temp dropped to minus 72!

I'm normally roasting too - which is why I don't like wearing a jacket. The merino base layer is about a mm thick and with an equally thin trail shirt on top, the double layer keeps me from overheating but stops the wind chill too. Perfect, especially as the merino doesn't hold sweat.

Hope this helps.

I've just been in Costco, the wholesale warehouse. They've got some long sleeved ones in there for £7.18 which is dirt cheap. They were quite thin but felt warm. For that sort of money you can take a chance. It wasn't a make I knew but Costco is usually very good stuff and they don't quibble if you return items.
You need a card to get into Costco but if anyone wants one and either picks up from me (DE72 3RH) or can meet at Cannock I'll be happy get them for forumees.

They will fall apart at the seams if they are anything like his kids football socks ... I refuse to spend a penny in any of his outlets ..but then that's purely because he spends next to nowt on my team

Yep ..he has most of the country fooled ..he runs the club the same as his business ..buy cheap ..and sell at one hell of a profit . We brought some decent players in during the summer ..but after selling Cabaye & Debuchy ..our net spend was only 1million .. If there was any real ambition he would have dipped into the £60m Sky TV money ..which seems to be lining his trouser pockets Thank god for Graham Carr ..our scout !
