How can anyone say what is right or wrong (or enduro - whatever that means) What's right is what suits you. I would never go back to 2 x 10. 32f & 11/36 was all I ever needed for the Chase but for the Peaks I needed a bit more, so fitted a 40t cog - it will never be used on the Chase.

I think I may just go back to what I`m used to and that`s 36/22 up front, the only reason I`m running 39/26 is cos that`s how the bandit came. it`s got nothing to do with you lot saying that 42t is for soft tw@s

I`ve got a peaks ride coming up and I may need a bit of help

All those ratios mean feck all to me - just squiggles on a page - may as well be hieroglyphics I'm a pussy and don't care who knows it - if I'm doing the Peaks at some point no way will I manage on the current gearing, the Donkey near killed me on Friday. From what you say Will there is no real point in going 1x10 on a 32 as it will pretty much negate the 42t cog, so I either just chuck the cog in as is or go even more pussy and have a 30t front and the 42t but then I'd lose too much top end. Whatever happens I would never use it on the Chase but will need help in Wales etc. Cogger let us know your thoughts on the 32t 40t combo? don't think that would be enough for me though.

1x10 and expander, also has the benefit of less weight!

True but then I'm looking at 30t up front. My pride won't allow it. If I went 32 up front with an expander it's probs chucking money away as it'll be pretty much the same as my 2x10 is now.

I think a lot of people are missing the point of 1x10 it was developed primarily, so that you could have the range, yet weight saving, hence the expander cog for climbing, it was targeted at trail center riders that don't necessarily need top speed... But wanted to save weight, and still have the climbing capabilities.... If your torn about gear ratios alone, then it probably isn't for you... If you want to save weight, and have a good range.. Then go for it...

Cheers cogger, cheers Adam for cutting to the chase and you are spot on. I loved 1x10 on the HT and I am sure I'll end up 1x10 on the Chief eventually, it might have to be 30t up front though. #oldfattwat

I've proper ballsed up. Bought the 42t one up cog and then realised that I have a 11-32 XT rear cassette (no wonder climbs have been a struggle ) So the 42t cog only works with the 11-36 cassette, so if I want to fit this I need a new 11-36 XT cassette, my noob question is, will this be ok and still run ok with the 38-24 double up front? shit, ay I?

Yeah cheers mate - I am a prat - I didn't pay enough attention when I was building the Chief, just assumed I'd specced a 11-36. At least I know why I've been feeling like my climbing has suffered!
CRC are doing them for 30 smackeroonies, I'll get on it..

Yeah you're right mate - proper fucked it up just thought my legs were going I'm ordering the 11-36 this morning, I was thinking of selling the 42t on but then I want to do the Peaks at one point - so I might as well just chuck it on now I've bought it - and promise myself that it doesn't get used unless as a bail out on Welsh or Peaks climbs.

Got you - I think I will mate. Nice to have a bail out cog, but tbf like Will said last night - the 11-36 will feel like an extra gear after struggling up climbs on the 11-32!

No I'm going to fit it mate - deffo. Another reason is that, when the double chain rings begin to wear, I'll probably go 1x10 and I KNOW I'll need the 42t then!
