I'd seen that on trailforks and was considering it for an evening ride on day 1.

Certainly does involve the Ghru. The main memory of the area I have is the trails around Rothiemurchus which looked so awesomely wonderful I had to do some riding there. Have a look at this page from MBRs best flow trails (although seeing the loop they suggest for bolts law I'm taking this with a pinch of salt) www.mbr.co.uk/news/britains-best-flow-trails-339780The pic at the top of that page is exactly how I remember Rothiemurchus. Yep, i'll have the maps please. You could give them to Graham the next time you see him and I'll pick them up on the next TVMTB night ride? Was also thing a loop down to Glen Feshie forest and possibly the burma road classic loop. With Glen Tilt anti clockwise on the way home.

Destination decided: Aviemore. Accommodation booked. Routes almost decided but will call in at the bike shops up there on arrival to get local knowledge. Excitement building. Even managed to negotiate a 2nd night away too.
Reason I chose Aviemore is I visited the area about 10 years ago with the Mrs and couldn't help spending pretty much all the time thinking I should have bought my bike and I made a promise to one day go back. So I am.

I saw this on Grahams strava feed and wondered why he turned back. I was thinking boggy ground or bad weather but now I know the real reason. Do you not keep a little shovel and some bog roll in the camelbak?

That must be the best bothy in the land, looks like a holiday home.
Edit - just had a look on their website. They're a cross between the 2, and here's me thinking you were roughing it.

The heckler is the single pivot version of the bronson. Simpler design, less to go wrong but i prefer vpp. Just feels nicer to me. If you do get one of them I advise just getting the frame then buying all the other bits separately from crc/merlin, etc. You'll save yourself a fair whack over a full bike.
General servicing vpp is easy but changing the bearings when they go is a ballache as I found out. Even with all the proper tools it's easier to get someone else to do it. Trust me.

Indeed a tad wet. Dan and I did head back up to buzzards nest after we parted ways with you but didn't see a transition bike. With cold setting in we headed back up to bbb and the lovely descent back to the cars.
A fun, if damp, day with the joy of having a stick go through my rear wheel jamming it and bending a spoke. Spooky is still fun but super g needs a bit of tlc.
To top it off here's the worst geordie accent ever as promised:

Without trying to add fuel to the argument can I ask what people think of suspension, disc brakes and gears? They are all innovations to help you get up and down a hill quicker and in a more controlled manor than you could on a singlespeed rigid bike. Aren't ebikes a logical extension of that evolution? Doesn't mean you have to get one/like them but if they get more people out into the hills and enjoying themselves surely that's a good thing? (runs and hides) Nope, people shouldn't require persuasion to get out... I don't go to the gym, and put on my bionic biceps.. An e-bike was designed for one person... To make biking easier.. And suspension, gears, disc brakes, bigger tyres, etc aren't?
