Pads

Last time I used my Trek in anger was a couple of months back while on hol on the Gower, which just about killed off my brake pads (always use Nukeproof branded pads) .. so I put the OE Shimano sintered ones back in short term, but didn't get round to buying more NP's
Anyway, I was going to the Wyre Forest on Friday, but with one thing and another, decided to do a local loop instead, of around 18miles involving no driving for a change , 50/50 road/off, and a couple of short but brutal climbs, followed by a hardpack decent of almost a kilometre where you can reach daft speeds if there's no dog walkers about
Brakes were ok for the general work, but toward the bottom of said decent doing about a million mph (ish) on me little 26er, it became painfully obvious that A. I wasn't on the Mega, and B. these feckin pads were shite !!! the rear barely managed to lock up, and I'm surprised the front didn't burst a hose the pressure I was using to try and come to a holt
I now have some NP sintered on there way, but puzzled as to why the Shimmy pads have kinda .. gone off!!??
I'm always REALLY careful about pad/rotor contamination, and all my bikes are kept in A1 mechanical order .. but these stoppers used to be absolutely mental (XT's, 203mm Icetech rotor) and now they are shite
Etching the rotors made no difference, nor detergent and boiling water soaking the pads ... any ideas ? (apart from sling um in the bin )

as they slide too much due to there shiny texture ...
Yeah that's kinda why I didn't want full on waterproof as such, more water repellent like the MT500's, tho the ones Glynn linked above don't look too bad in that respect, and cheap! .. so not the end of the world if they are crap
Bad luck with the stream LOL! ... I did a shallow ish stream crossing up on the hills at Elan last week which luckily I made it through, but then 5mins later found the hill bridleway I was on ran through quite traitorous marshy area's .. found this out the hard way ... bike stopped dead, I kinda stepped off the side into what looked to be only about 4" deep, and my AM45 disappeared into the jet black gew
No doubt would've looked quite comical to an onlooker, but you couldn't see any sign of life in any direction up there other than the odd sheep, and the red kites soaring over head .. few!

If I have any problems with the reverb, which I never have had, I will defo look at one of those. I don't like the squishy press mechanism of the reverb compared to these lever operated versions but not worth the hassle of changing just now. ^^^ same
Nice bit of kit that

Endura humvees. I've got 3 pairs and excellent. I will spray with water repellent on very wet days 3/4 Humvee's are the only other shorts I have at the mo actually , and agreed, they are great .. just not that good for preventing "SAS" ..

My MT500's are coming to the end of their weatherproof life, or will be soon I would think, after age's of reliable and comfortable service ..
Do I get another pair for all weather ? .. or is there anything else as good without being more of a full on waterproof short .. MTR's perhaps ??
Cheers

I would look and keep looking on Pinkbike until some second hand Pikes come on. I've tried that in the past, tho top shelf forks are very rarely for sale .. I even asked at a couple of LBS to keep an eye out and left my number
Spose it depends how long you can wait if you don't know someone that's selling ..

Got Slants on my Trek, tick all the box's (price, tapered, 34mm, 15mm axle) and work well
no, Pikes they aint, but at a fraction of the cost .. and the sorta money you have to spend, deffo worth a go

I'm sure we're all sick of this thread now, but as y'all took the time to post
I gave it another treatment with sterilizing tabs, this time x2 tabs and hot water, and for a lot longer than stated on the pack .. and while it was on the side in the kitchen, I realized I could smell the chlorine smell on the outside as well !! .. so its obviously the material itself rather than anything else which I kinda knew .. so, I'm gonna use the Platypus for now, but perhaps try something flavoured in the CB instead of fresh water before giving up on it completely ..
Cheers for response

Very rarely clean mine out but ride pretty regularly so it not very often I find any 'tadpoles' in it. A good clean and then freezer should kill anything nasty
That's the thing, its not that its dirty, exactly the opposite .. its cleaned out properly after each use, and it had this taste/smell from new!!
so I can only assume its to do with the rubbery plastic nature of the material its made from perhaps
I do know the Platypus one is a different material that has no smell to it what so ever (which I've just found luckily )

Grow a pair of bal..... just drink It regardless of taste, floating bits
I did, yesterday, all 2ltrs of it ... it reminded me of when I was nipper learning to swim, and copped a nose full in the pool
I have a got a "Platypus" one somewhere, which is prolly a bit better than the CB, but that's plan B, and only if I can find it of course (I've probably "put it safe" .. )

Had this a few years back when I first bought a Camelbak, first few rides the water tasted "chemically" ... so bought some sterilizing tablets and treated .. jobs a good'n!
That taste/smell has come back with a vengeance after a while of no use!! .. and the process of sterilizing hasn't worked this time! or running hot or cold water through it .. its like a very strong taste/smell of chlorine or similar, not pleasant!
Any idea's folks ? (other than the usual type of "fill it with beer then ya wont taste it" idea's .. )

Great pics. The Elan valley is on my to do list!!! Have you had chance to get over the wyre yet???
Hi Kalli, not yet, but I'll deffo be over there end of the week .. I had the whole day to myself yesterday so thought I better make the most of it (180mile round trip)
I do love that area, you could ride natural terrain till you drop over there (not far for me then at the mo )

Cheers Hodgy
The eagle eyed will no doubt spot the action cam on the LH/side of the down tube, was hoping to see the Pikes taking a hammering on the rocky decent back to the car ... didn't work for shite! .. looked like the space shuttles re-entry with the vibes

No rain, no wind, no fitness .... I knew the climbs would hurt, but jeeze .. I never expected to have to stop every 50yards ... the cabin I'm building and have been every spare minute I've had for the whole of this year has a lot to answer for
Anywho, I enjoyed myself, and had a lovely change of scenery

Now sorted ..however it does throw up that should you have the same kind of problems while out riding where fitting a tube is the only option left ...you will probably die of hypothermia before you unseal/seat the tyre.. time to add some more tools to your ruck sack Yeah ..... a tooooob !!

I'm trying to go tubless...but I'm stuck at the moment having lost about 14lbs ( I put a couple back on ...)haha To be honest though ..wouldn't that make your wheels really heavy ?

Oops. Time for a lemsip I think. Meant to say it's misses most of the supposed benefits by adding sealant to the tube rather than removing them.
How'dya figure that ? ... all I'm after is better puncture resistance which is surely the main reason for the whole idea .. ?
I don't really buy into the weight loss, unsprung weight saving, lower pressures blah blah .. the suspension and tyre pressures work fine for me on my bikes TBH, but the thought of not havin to remove a wheel/tube in the pissin rain trailside is quite appealing
The rims are supposedly tubeless on the Mega, tho when I swapped the rear tire, the rim tape must have put on by Stevie Wonder!! and if that could seal under pressure I'd eat my own foot

I must be one of the very few that haven't gone tubless to date, and TBH, don't have any plans to in the near future .. however, I have been considering putting "Stans" in the tubes and trying it ..
For your basic thorn stabs it should work fine I guess which is as much as I'd expect from it really, anyone on here running sealant in tubes ? and is it worth bothering with ?

Just had this crop up on Face-ache: nukeproof.com/technical-support/Updated Tech Support section of the website. Has frame manuals going back to 2012 - useful for those of us with slightly older models. Great shout that bud
