Hi guys I'm new to the forum and kinda new and out of touch with modern mountain biking after about a 15 year, break I want to get a new bike I used to have an orange missile back in the day but now want something more heavy duty. I was originally set on getting the five lovely bike I like the brand, frame design, 5 year warranty and it come well specd and gets good reviews and let's not forget hand made in Halifax .. But after playing around on the bike creator on their site I realised once I've species the entry level pro with the rs finishing kit got a dropper seat post and the colour I want it's only about £200 less than a same specd alpine which has more travel and also the better fox 36 forks. Compaired to the 34s on the five. My question is would I even need the extra that the alpine has I'm not a pro and only really starting out again Any replies would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Alex

Fives are more trail bikes alpines ar more all mountain depends what you want to ride mate ? Young jack who rides an alpine love his but it's as long as my 29er If you want fast and chucklable go for the five mate will do most things you ask if it and a lot lighter

^^^^ as above!? The Four looks a great bike...but then it starts to open other choices from Whyte for example...(which is where i would go)...and probably even save a few quid (and pounds! Sorry Gaz! LOL)

Go for the alpine you won't regret it
I went for a five and came back with an alpine and wouldn't change it now
It's heavy and the gears make your legs die on the flat and it's as long as a narrow boat
But when you get going it's unstoppable so planted over anything iv chucked it down
Steeper the terrain the better the bike feels

The four is like a baby five tho but the same price.. Not for me lol .. I was settled on the five till I see the alpine was basically the same price. Tbh I'm no down hill racer I do more cross country trail but want when I hit the down hill to be able to take anything I can through at it. Would the alpine be ok on the flats and uphills or isit more a gravity bike I'm 6.2" so I'm getting a large frame anyway is the alpine much bigger than the five looking at the dimensions I think there is less than an inch init also very similar head angle. hmm it's difficult

Jack ...you must also be suffering for your sins ! I'm still on a Santa Cruz Nomad 1st Generation...it's as heavy as fook with 160 travel both ends .. but would I swap it for a lighter trail machine ...you bet your life I would ! One day when I eventually get around to getting that 5010 I've promised myself I will be an absolute weapon and all thoughts of an ebike will disappear...LOL! Go for the five mate unless you are doing heavy duty riding ...your legs will love the weight reduction ...

I wouldn't say I'm suffering
Just as quick as any average person up the climbs and I don't need to push up anything that the others ride up etc
Certainly makes you more manly and gets your fitness up quickly,
My theory was (ignoring all the technical crap)
Alpine is better down hill Five is better up hill
How ever marginal the difference to a Joe blogs rider would be
Out with my mates or the forum etc we never really race up hills but we always like to go fast down so I went for the downhill based one, geo wise etc it's basixlly a downhill rig with less travel,
At a trail centre it's massively over kill But when we go out on the natural stuff it's perfect
Gets me up and feels amazing on the way back down
There's nothing at your general trail centre and most downhill courses that a five couldn't handle happily it's just the daft steep stuff and huge mental rock gardens the alpine is more suited

Wouldn't disagree with anything you have said there Jack ..my reference to you suffering for your sins was in direct relation to the weight of the bike and I was only drawing a comparison to my own suffering on an equally heavy bike ...but then I forgot that you are at the other end of the age scale ..younger and fitter than this old geezer ...

Thanks for the replys guys, hmm this has kinda confirmed what I was thinking the alpine may be just too much for what I need. But isit really that much heavier than the five because I hear the five isn't the lightest fame anyway although I'm sure they're both much lighter than the old biked of my day , with the old marzocchi forks geez they where heavy, I've got a good set of legs on me I'm a semi pro boarder retiring squash player. I do a lot of bike work in the gym. I'm not scared to get a sweat on lol . And like you've said jack when I'm out with my mates you don't race uphill just down but I also want to be able to ride the bike anywhere and it not feel a burden. Also I don't want to get the five then wish I had the extra the alpine has (although unlikely ) . Also I have looked at other bikes not sure if I've seen the whyte t130 but tbh I've really had my heart set on an orange I had a missile many years ago I like the brand and the frame style and it's a name I'm familiar with. I was looking a cubes too but just don't trust the brand these makes seem to have come from nowhere last couple years duno about whyte but defo don't trust cube . Maybe that's just me being silly

Hey I'm getting old I'm 27 soon!
It's a kg or so heavier than thr five not massively, depends how heavy you are your self I'm only 11 stone so bike weight wasn't a huge factor to me
I'd rather me over biked than under biked haha,
I did the 50 miles off road lap of the peaks a few weeks ago on the alpine and it handled all the climbs perfectly and I was quite happy on it 6500ft of climbing
And I'm booked on for the South downs way challenge 100 miles of off road goodness with 12k climbing I'll be doing that on the alpine to
I'll happily ride it all day long up and over what ever,

Did notice your avatar ! Retiring squash player ...knees? Haha not my knees thank god , I'm 28 next month I know that's not old atall but I end up playing to 100 world ranked players quite often and I can keep up with them and hold my own still, it's just the next day my body is ruined especially my glutes, hamstrings and lower back. I've got a day job I'm an electrican and somtimes I can barely move at work lol and I've got a 3yr old aswell and playing in 3 diff leagues most weeks the Mrs isn't fond of, and I've been having physio every week for the last two years which is expensive, so just easing off the squash no more pro tournaments and just play local league and gentle friendlies. It's a shame there just isn't more money in the sport .. So I decided to buy a Mountain bike and ruin my body with that instead
