must admit john, its more than i thought.i thought the return was going to be an easier option. as i say we can alter it with our local sherpa daz, or just take the easy riverside route back on the road , but i always prefer to finish any ride with a good descent told you i wasnt very familiar with it round there

howdo daz...........so looks like we have a local sherpa guide, and a good turnout, we'll have a headcount again a bit nearer the day.

i may have found a route. it misses apedale and crackpot but still runs over the moor onn bridleway. i'll plot it and post up later on, or tomorrow...see what you think.

there is the slightest chance we get lost . last time ,after crackpot hill i decided i was knackered trying to keep up with the fit'uns so missed out apedale. i'll plot the route and we might just suck it and see but there are options to take the bailout to miss out the climb after apedale.we can decide when we get to that point.

iv ridden alone as many times, if not more than riding in a group, due to my billy no-mates work rota. i definately think its held me back with skills improvement as im more aware of risk when im alone. but like hodgy says it can also feel quite stimulating being alone on quiet trails, reflecting on things and doing your own thing. i reckon iv found more mid-week riders to ride with since joining this forum tho, so well done us!

im open to suggestions for a plan B but i dont think we'll need one. forecast still looks dry for next weekend. only thing im wondering about is because iv only done it once, im not familiar with the route, if there is a covering of snow it might make some of the trails a bit vague. i am using a plotted route on my garmin and others on the ride might be more familiar so it probs isnt even an issue, i might over thinking.... . im still not sure yet of the route of the return leg back to grinton, there seems to be several options but dont know which is best.

im still sceptical about 1 ring at the front. what happened to the advice of not causing too much sideways stress to the chain? Seems to be working fine after a year use no more chains or running dear then normal .. how do you find the range of gears? on our derwent edge ride, jack spoke about not having a low enough gear to give the right cadence on some of the climbs.

just to add chris, obviously it makes a difference whether your mech is up-pull or down-pull. mine does either, and went for up.

if you look in this thread at the pic i posted of it when it was first built up you might be able to make out the routing.or this one was taken at a different angle. if you save this image then zoom in it should be clear.i threaded the cable through the rear shock mount then down to the front mech to make as large a loop as possible in the cable (try to avoid tight loops). as far as i could see this was the best option.

i understand what your saying hodgy, its easy for anyone to say they're interested off the top of their head (myself included)but not always able to committ for all sorts of reasons, and very disappointing when people start to pull out. it would be a brilliant weekend of riding and roughing it, maybe if it was a bit further into the summer it might have been more successful, but harder to find vacencies..........i dont know. i hope you get enough riders to make this happen.

ok we might have to come to an agreement about the start time. if roundie needs an earlier start and gaz is coming the furthest? is there a reason you cant make it earlier john?

Glynn that's crazy, you are around 40 miles further away but it takes more or less the same time. Could we not aim for a ten meet up for 10.30 departure. Sunset for the 16th jan 16.54. I need to get some mor climbing miles in I think. It's ironic that mr I'm so slow and unfit Gaz is training around the peaks and the like to improve fitness for marathon events when I'm just interested at the moment in getting fit enough to be able to join yourself and Gaz on a peaks or lakes ride. He can't keep this ruse up my more. lol. its straight up the M1 and A1 for me, so almost all m-way or carraigeway. a later start is fine by me john, i'll go along with what the majority want to do,
