Today, an electronic fat bike came whirring past us up a climb, rider had slippers on and was smoking a pipe...and you are trying to tell me he was breathing out of his ring piece like I was? no fecking dice Neil, it's just cheating. Also, if you ever call Birds ugly again......I know where you live and I will hunt you down...

That's a good point, tbf I don't often disagree with you Neil but we'll just have to do just that on this one. I tried to put my prejudices against the bike aside and did a quick 'fors' and 'againsts on having an ebike and it just doesn't stack up for me. I do think there is a place for them and if others enjoy riding them then that's great. I'd feel like a cheat though, is what it comes down to I suppose (apart from the weight, looks, potential mechanicals etc). You said the one you rode handles great which is amazing to me and shows they have been well thought out though, as I can't imagine one being 'chuckable' but you've rode it so you know.

They're "aids" designed to make tasks easier...such as stair lifts... Helpful to some... Cheating bastards to others!... There is absolutely no evidence to suggest they offer the same workout as a regular bike, the very statement is a contradiction in itself... But I haven't anything against seeing them on the Trails... I'm into the whole engineering side of it...

Pez...the main thing that sticks in my craw..is that most negative comments are coming from people who have not as yet slung a leg over one..I get totally that the looks will not appeal to everyone ..that's life ... The "cheating " angle I just don't get at all .. what or who are you cheating against? If you are taking part in a race against a normal bike..and trying to conceal a motor ..then yeah that's cheating but I'm sick to the back teeth of trying to explain that you will get just as much of a work out on this type of bike as any other..DEPENDING on how much effort you put in .. They don't move by themselves you HAVE to pedal them and the ONLY difference is that you will cover more ground faster... most probably in a lot higher gear than you ever have before..and will make short work of technical climbs that have had you beaten in the past! I think if most people who are against these bikes are honest with themselves and substitute the word "cheating" for " embarrassment" because they think that it doesn't make them look as hard-core ..which is quite honestly fucking laughable. I'm totally at ease & happy in my own skin to not give a flying fuck what other people think ( as I go sailing past on one of these) ...when people like Russell (in particular) Manf,Gaz (windysurfer) Ian Bell..all with fitness levels I will never attain can be so positive about these bikes and " get " what they are about having tried them albeit so very briefly in Manf & Gaz's case...then I can't really take seriously criticism from someone who has not . Like I have previously said ...try one ..then tell me that you haven't enjoyed the experience and I will listen to what you have to say as to why....

The cheating bit is if I'm riding with mates on 'proper' bikes then I am cheating them, they'll be dying whilst I glide up climbs - you must get that? also I think I'd be cheating myself too - how can you possibly get the same workout on something that's assisted pedalling against your own muscle power? Or would I have to stay out twice as long to get the same work out?
I'll leave it there then, as we obviously won't agree. It's been a fine effort from you to extol the virtues of e-bikes though - I hadn't even thought about them until your test ride.

What I hate is watching some big fat slug overtaking you up an hill hardly peddling and you wonder why people don't like them ... Exactly what happened yesterday..he was on an e fat bike, of all things. I think it was the smug look on his face as he wafted past that pissed me off most I just don't like the idea, nothing to do with 'hardcore' as I know I certainly ain't that - but if there is a technical climb that always beats me, then resorting to leccy power to finally 'beat' the climb is just cheating myself - it's that simple. If I can't manage more than 30 miles on a ride, then I'm not 'cheating' by doing 50 on an e bike. When I'm out it's me and my capabilities against the trails, if I start using leccy power then it isn't really me anymore.

Without trying to add fuel to the argument can I ask what people think of suspension, disc brakes and gears? They are all innovations to help you get up and down a hill quicker and in a more controlled manor than you could on a singlespeed rigid bike. Aren't ebikes a logical extension of that evolution? Doesn't mean you have to get one/like them but if they get more people out into the hills and enjoying themselves surely that's a good thing?

Pez ..let's call it a draw then ...by the way I get the fat slug / smug look thing..but I would just laugh at him if that was the case . . When I started writing this it was with the intention of letting folks know how much fun they were to ride...you won't really believe what I'm telling you until you have tried one ...but the fact is I have extensively tried one on very mixed / varied terrain pushed higher gears in the lowest of settings (battery) ..and let's not also forget on a bike that is twice the weight of your own.. climbed stuff that would have had me beaten on my own bike and had a ball doing so ..it was so much FUN....and that my friend is 90% of the reason why I personally go riding ...

I've already said that Andy! If you're buggered and old, or have a disability - fantastic.
I just personally don't like them or the idea of them FOR ME right now. However, as I progressively become more and more decrepit, I can see the use of them if the alternative is an e-bike or give up riding altogether, until then...I'll leave them to the cheats!

Agreed, although I scored first and you only equalised from a very dodgy decision in the 94th minute

Whats your view on uplifts then? Do you class that as cheating? I'm not trying to cause any arguments but just interested

Youve said it yourself though Hodgy... This bike "helped" you beat stuff that would usually beat you... Therefore cheating yourself... I had a 5 minute blip on a Haibike E-bike.. Not for one second would I have any more fun... I'd just find things easier...

Whats your view on uplifts then? Do you class that as cheating? I'm not trying to cause any arguments but just interested Of course not - that's all part of the DH 'thing' and is normal. We have a bit of DH at Cannock at Stile Cop and I'd bloody love an uplift there, nothing good about pushing your bike uphill! I can't really see how you could even put the 2 things in the same category either.

Uplifts is the equivalent of me driving to Degla car park to start a ride...
